Data Access Service

Tuesday 11 December 2007 00:00:00

As you already know our data accesss services are evolving (email from November 28th 2007). At the same time as  the qualified access to "Whois data" (news and document), the public and work tools will be updated and placed in production on January 29th, 2008.

We have scheduled the following evolutions: Strong Rate-limiting on port 43 of the general public Whois  Change of data format: the new format already available for two years becomes the default format. The old format will remain available through the -o option. You will find a complete summary of output formats by using the following command on the actual Whois: whois -h -- -h -v -l fr  Web Whois: Disappearance of the port 43 display on the web. On both access, the data given is the most thorough possible while respecting the limited publishing of individuals (PP). A "White list" set up on two IP addresses by registrar. Requests from these IP addresses will have higher rate-limiting to access the following Whois data: domain name, holder name, registrar, name servers, domain status, anniversary date. A registrar consultation (email from October 30th 2007) was made in order to identify the volumes of requests made by the registrars and help us tune the rate-limiting without deteriorating your services. Without any answers to this consultation, the parameters will be fixed as fairly as possible according to our own security measures.  IMPORTANT : Please remember to write to with the official IP addresses you wish to add in the white-list: IP1 : IP2 : Finally we would like to point out that the work done on the port 43 of the Whois, while improving the service, has forced us to remove the IPv6 access on the Whois. This access will be back as soon as standardized developments are possible. closing of the list of newly registered domain names recorded during the last 30 days (

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.
In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic's role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, donates 90% of its profits to its Foundation for Digital Solidarity. Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.
Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has 80 employees.
